Obituary

Leno E. Slanzi, 92, of Hurley, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at Mellen Manor Nursing Home in Mellen. He was born Jan. 18, 1915, in Hurley, son of the late Frank and Louise (Nicholi) Slanzi, and attended Hurley schools. During World War II, he worked in shipyards in Kirkland, Wash. for several years. He was married to the former Margaret J. Watson on May 23, 1942, in Boot Hill, Wash. Together, they moved to Hurley with their daughter Marlene in 1946. Margaret preceded Leno in death on Dec. 28, 2003. A carpenter by trade, Leno worked for Leno Samuelli and Angelo Luppino Construction for many years. He was also a millwright, and was responsible for the technical installation of the chair lift at Indianhead Mountain in Wakefield. The Riblet Co. offered Leno a job to supervise and install Riblet lifts throughout the U.S., however he declined, as he didn't want to leave the area. Leno built the chalet at Whitecap Mountain and ran the ski shop for many years. He was on the National Ski Patrol at Whitecap, and also groomed the hill. A member of the U.S. Ski Team, he served as a judge at the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, N.Y. He served on the Board of Directors of Copper Peak and was Chief of the Hill during ski flying competition. He also raced snowmoblies at Eagle River, Wis. and Ironwood. Leno was an active participant in the Iron County ATV Rally since 1985, and was always willing and present to help. He also enjoyed club rides. He was an active member of Eagle Bluff Golf Club, and was involved in the construction of the golf course itself since day one. He also was in charge of golf cart maintenence there for many years. Leno enjoyed hunting at the camp on Russell Brothers Rd. in Mercer, and loved spending time with his grandchildren and his special companion, his Golden Lab, "Sandy". He was a man of all trades and was a good Joe. He enjoyed life to the fullest, outliving his father. Surviving are a son, Larry (Gretchen), Woodruff; three daughters, Marlene (Jerry) Pfeifer, New Berlin; Virginia "Ginger" Ivio, Sheboygan; and Janet Slanzi, Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren, Lori (Christopher) Rudolf, Elkhorn; Michael Pfeifer, Muskego; and Kevin and Eric Ivio, Sheboygan; two great-grandchildren, Lucy Rudolf and Katelyn Pfeifer; two sisters, Olivia Whitlow and Rita Noyes, both of Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Leno was preceded in death by a son, James Leno, Dec. 9, 1973; a brother, Frank; and five sisters, Clara, Mary and Lucy Slanzi, Doris Olson and Eda Maffesanti. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. John L. Brophy, celebrant. Rite of Committal will be at the church, with luncheon to follow at the Iron Nugget in downtown Hurley. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
