Obituary

Lee Elliot "Butch" Doriot, 60, of Mercer, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at his home in Mercer, with his faithful dog, Rusty, by his side.      He was born Nov. 21, 1950, in Ironwood, Mich., son of Elaine (Sutherland) Mears and the late Calvin Doriot. He attended Mercer Elementary School and graduated from Mercer High School in 1968.      Butch entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 20, 1970, proudly serving his country during the Vietnam War in Co. B, 575th Engineer Battalion, Third Army, and was honorably discharged as a Specialist 4 on April 24, 1972.      Following his discharge, he came home to Mercer and worked in the family Sinclair Service Station, for B.J. Bos Construction, and Deen Palmquist Logging.      After moving to Montana in 1978, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service and later retired from Columbia Falls Aluminum Co. after 21 years of service as a smelter pot operator.      Butch was an excellent cook, and especially loved the outdoors- hunting, fishing, camping, making firewood and taking long walks. He was also an avid Green Bay Packer fan and experienced his first trip to Lambeau Field last year which was a cherished memory. People enjoyed spending time with him and listening to his long, interesting stories and sharing lots of laughs. Children especially loved being with him.      Butch's family and friends described him as generous, kind, gentle and trustworthy. He was a fun loving man with a unique smile, and will be dearly missed.      He was married to Catherine McMahon and later to Nancy Hoffman.      Surviving are his mother, Elaine Mears, and sister, Linda ( favorite brother-in-law Mike) Gentile, both of Mercer; two brothers, Rodney (Linda) Doriot, Park Rapids, Minn., and Eugene (Kim) Mears, Wilmington, N.C.; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; his loyal childhood friend, Pat Brandt, of Mercer; many other very special friends; and his faithful companion, his dog Rusty.      Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his precious son, Brad Lee, in 2005; step-father Dale Mears, who raised him as his own, in 1997; and infant sister, Diana Lynn Doriot.      Out of respect for Butch's wishes, cremation has taken place.      Private graveside services and interment will be in the Mercer Cemetery.      Butch's obituary can be viewed online and condolences given to his family at [email protected]      Arrangements were entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood.      "We don't just each have a gap inside us but together a gap among us. We have to live differently with one another. We have to live around the gap."      "Not even the best of words can take away pain. What words can do is testify that there is more than pain in our journey on earth to a new day. Of those things that are more, the greatest is love. Express your love."                                                                     --- Nicholas Wolterstorff                                                                     from "Lament for a Son"
