Obituary

Lawrence C. "Smitty" Smith, 89, of Hillsboro, Ohio and a former longtime Ironwood, Mich. resident, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 15, 2009, at Heartland Rehabilitation Center in Hillsboro. He was born Nov. 6, 1919, in Ironwood, son of the late Percy and Jesse (Hunn) Smith, attended Ironwood schools, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II and was honorably discharged as a sergeant on Feb. 15, 1946. Following his discharge, Smitty returned to Ironwood and worked in the Penokee and Newport Mines. He then was employed as a truck driver and deliveryman at Cohodas-Paoli Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1981. Smitty was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, Ironwood American Legion Post 5, the Aurora Athletic Club, and the Range Horseshoe League, and a former member and past president of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He enjoyed fishing and going to the casino, and was an avid New York Yankees fan. On July 2, 1949, he was married to the former Elizabeth J. "Betty" Finco at the St. Ambrose Church Rectory. She preceded him in death on July 21, 2005. Surviving are a son, Daniel (Roberta), Hillsboro; two grandchildren, Christopher (Coreen) Smith, West Chicago, Ill., and Rebecca Smith (Victor Coker), New York City, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Colin Christopher and Carter Jay Smith.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Smitty was preceded in death by three brothers, Stuart in childhood, and Percy and Gordon. In accordance with Smitty's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Michael Jacobus, celebrant. Rite of Committal will take place in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, where full military rites will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Spring inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Peace Adopt-A-Student program.
