Kenneth M. Haanpaa, 81, of Ironwood Township, died
peacefully Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, at Gogebic
Medical Care Facility in Wakefield, following a lengthy illness. He was born June 1, 1931, in Ironwood
Township, son of the late Eric and Fannie (Rajala) Haanpaa, and attended
Roosevelt School. He then served in the U.S. Army for two years in Germany in
Occupation Forces at the end of World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to the
area and worked at Twin Ports Creamery in Ironwood and Bessemer Creamery in
Bessemer until it closed. He was then employed at White Pine Copper Co. as a
driller/blaster for 26 years, retiring in 1992. Ken attended Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church
in Ironwood. He enjoyed going to the casino and coffee klatching with his
friends, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He especially enjoyed spending
time with his family and grandchildren. On Feb. 14, 1953, he was married to Pauline J.
'Polly" Kasper at the St. Mary's rectory in
Hurley, Wis. by the late Monsignor Michael Prock. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Kenneth Jr.
(Vicky), Ironwood Township, and Michael (Shaaren), LaPorte, Minn.; three
daughters, Linda (James) Mattila, Middletown, N.Y., Paula (Matt) Peterson,
Palmyra, Va., and Susan (Ed) Traeger, Mayfield, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; five brothers, Arnold, Ironwood, Wilbert, Bessemer, James
(Shirley), Oxnard, Calif., Royce (Brenda), Camarillo, Calif., and Gerald
(Marlene), Reno, Nev.; three sisters, Bertha Saari, Wakefield, Edna Brown,
Ironwood Township, and Margie Lozano, Bessemer; brothers-and-sisters-in-law,
Larry and Andrea Kasper, Ashland, Wis., Rosemarie and Gordon Koski, Ironwood
Township, Margaret Gingery, Hurley, Clifford Muhonen, Wakefield, and Mary
Haanpaa, Ironwood Township; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ken was preceded in death
by two brothers, Donald and Ronald. Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has
taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Saturday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation in the St. Joseph Family
Room at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev.
Robb Jurkovich, celebrant. A flag presentation ceremony will take place
in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, accorded by representatives of the
Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard, with luncheon to follow in the
parish hall. R ite of
Committal and interment will be in Sunset Acres Cemetery, Ironwood Township, in
