Ken "Teach" Sackett, 85, of
Southgate Village, Hurley, and recently Mellen Manor in Mellen, died Wednesday,
May 15, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. Ken had come full circle, having grown up in
Hurley on Second Avenue, and after many years in Beloit, moved back to the
Northwoods area in 2004. He was a corporal medic in the Korean War, stationed in
Japan at an Army hospital where he became fluent in Japanese. Post war, he
attended Superior State College where he received his teaching degree in 1958
followed later by a Master's Degree in Education from the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater. He taught and coached at Ericcson in Superior, then moved
his family down to Beloit where he taught and coached at Robinson Elementary
School for almost three decades. His teams won numerous city championships
throughout his tenure. Ken was an educator, mentor and coach most of
his adult life. He touched the lives of so many kids who still ask about him
today! He will be deeply missed by family, friends and former
students. He married the former Kathy Soine on Aug. 6,
1955, in Cloquet, Minn. She preceded him in death on Dec. 9, 2001. Surviving are his children, Stacy (Ricky)
Moore, Montreal, Scott (Teresa) Sackett, Appleton, and Todd (Jacky) Sackett,
Arden, NC; grandchildren, Meghan Sackett, Menasha, Mallory Sackett, Appleton,
and Mykola Sackett and Zachary Sackett, both of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada;
stepgrandchildren, Chad (Katrina) Moore, Gilbert, Ariz., and Matt Moore, Sparks,
Nev.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Joshua and Jackson Moore, Gilbert; and a
brother-in-law, Kim Soine, Beloit. Out of respect for Ken's wishes, cremation has
taken place. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, May
22, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at the First Presbyterian
Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Don Nickolson officiating. A flag presentation ceremony wil be accorded
by representatives of the combined Hurley American Legion Post 58 and Iron Co.
VFW Post 1580 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow at the Iron Nugget in
downtown Hurley. Graveside committal and interment will take
place at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 24, at Floral Lawns in South Beloit,
Ill. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to
the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Wisconsin Chapter, 2900 Curry Lane, Suite
