Keith C. Johnson, 64, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Bessemer, Mich., died
unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo. ND. He was born March 6, 1948, in Bessemer, son of
Eunice (Berg) and the late Leslie Johnson, attended Bessemer schools, and
graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in 1966. He then spent two years in the
U.S. Naval Reserves. On April 27, 1968, he was married to the
former Sandra K. Halberg of Wakefield, Mich., in Wakefield. Keith was a proud member of Operating
Engineers Local 139 and worked as a heavy equipment operator for many years for
various companies, but mainly C. Halberg Construction and New Berlin Grading,
and was part owner of Les Johnson and Son Construction, retiring in 2007. He
also was a ski instructor for ten years and groomer operator for 12 years at Big
Powderhorn Mountain. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and
especially enjoyed traveling the country with Sandy in their
motor home. Keith made friends everywhere he and Sandy
traveled. It often took him two hours just to take out the garbage because he
had to stop and talk to everyone. We will miss his wealth of knowledge on how to
fix or drive just about anything. We will miss his goofy smirky grin and his
grandchildren will miss their "Grumpa", but we take joy in knowing that he has
been reunited with those that have gone before him, especially his son, Tim. We
will think about them together in Heaven watching Nascar and the
Packers. Surviving are his wife Sandy, of 44 years;
daughter, Kim (Lonny) Roland, Fenton, Mich.; two grandchildren, Zachary Stella,
Madison, Wis., and Kelsey Stella, Fenton; two step grandchildren, Daniel and
Michael Roland, both of Vassar, Mich.; his mother, Eunice Johnson, Bessemer; a
brother, David (Ruth), Wakefield; three sisters, Janet (Randy) Kusch, Muskego,
Wis., Gail (Ed) Samson, Ironwood, Mich., and Susan (Dan) Jurakovich, Bessemer;
and numerous nieces, nephews and brothers-and-sisters-in-law. Besides his father, Keith was preceded in
death by his son, Tim, on Oct. 10, 2006; sister-in-law, Susan Paterno, on June
5, 2010; and father-and-mother-in-law, Clarence and Ruth Halberg. Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has
taken place. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Oct.
13, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 9:30 a.m., at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral
Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Gerald Anderson, pastor of
Sharon Lutheran Church in Bessemer, officiating. Committal will take place at the funeral home,
with luncheon to follow at Tacconelli's in downtown Ironwood. Private interment will be in Hillcrest
Cemetery, Bessemer. Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick
Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood, where condolences may be given
online at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.
