Katherine M. "Kaye" Lombardo, 86, of N-10585 Lake Rd., Ironwood Township, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, in Ironwood. The former Katherine Berglund was born July 24, 1920, in Kenton, daughter of the late Adolph and Hedwig (England) Berglund, attended elementary school in Bergland, and graduated from Ewen High School. She then attended Northern Michigan College in Marquette and North West Institute in Minneapolis, where she received a degree in medical laboratory technology. She was employed as an x-ray and lab tech at Grand View Hospital for three years, for Dr. Pierpont at the Montreal Mining Clinic in Montreal, Wis. for 15 years, for Dr. Harrington in Ironwood for three years, and again for Dr. Pierpont at LaCroix Hospital in White Pine for twelve years, retiring in 1981. Kaye was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, the Rebekah Circle, and Salem Seniors. She was also a member of the Ironwood Senior Center Council, the Grand View Hospital Auxiliary, and the Gogebic-Ontonagon County Nutrition Board, and served for many years as a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Drive in Ironwood. Her hobbies included knitting, swimming, camping and travelling, and shopping with her daughter. She especially loved animals. On Sept. 27, 1940, she was united in marriage to John Lombardo at Salem Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on July 9, 1990. Surviving are her daughter, Karen (Gary) Ovaska, Ironwood Township; three grandchildren, Gary John Ovaska (Jerrianne), Arpin, Wis., Shannon (Heather) Ovaska, Wausau, Wis., and Melanie (John) Janakas, Ironwood; six great-grandchildren, Gunnar, Mikayla, Paige, Cassidy, Katie, and Sawyer; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Kaye was preceded in death by a brother, John H. Berglund, and a sister, Laura Humphrey. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 19, at 11 a.m., at Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Francis Strong officiating. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday. Pallbearers will be Gary John and Shannon Ovaska, John Janakas, and Jim, Larry, and Eugene Lombardo.
