Katherine A. "Katie" LaSota,
93, of Ironwood, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, in Ironwood. The daughter of the late John and Rosa (Sicca)
Bunjevac, she was born Aug. 17, 1919, in Ironwood, attended local schools, and
was a lifelong resident. She married John J. LaSota on Nov. 16, 1940,
in Ironwood. He preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 2013. Katherine was a faithful member of Our Lady of
Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. As a young woman, she worked as a waitress in
Ironwood. She enjoyed cooking, canning, knitting and gardening. She was an
excellent cook and was well known for her pasties, special soups and specialty
breads. You may have been a lucky recipient of her potica bread or walnut and
poppy seed rolls at Christmas. Her sharp wit and great sense of humor will never
be forgotten. Survivors include her son, John (Margaret),
Ontonagon; grandchildren, Ann (Doug) Picotte, Milwaukee, James LaSota,
Shoreview, Minn., and Amy (Mike) Bigelow, Iron River; great-grandchildren,
Thomas Picotte, Brooke and Paige LaSota, and Garrett and Kyle Bigelow; brother,
John (Pat) Bunjevac, Ironwood; sisters, Ann Clark, Greer, So. Carolina, Mary
Slade, Aitkin, Minn., and Rose White and Julie Brew, both of Minneapolis;
sister-in-law, Dorothy Bunjevac, Ironwood; and many nieces and
nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, John,
of 72 years, she was preceded in death by brothers, Nick and Steve Bunjevac and
an infant brother; and sisters, Regina Tiziani, Amelia "Millie" Dural and Helen
Ledvina. Katie will be remembered for her many acts of
kindness including, along with other family members, caring for her parents, her
love for her family, and helping to provide care for her husband. Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has
taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation in the St. Joseph Family
Room at 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the
Rev. Robb Jurkovich, celebrant. Luncheon will follow in the parish
hall. Rite of Committal and interment will be in
Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, in the spring. Honorary pallbearers will be Katie's
grandchildren, Ann Picotte, James LaSota and Amy Bigelow; and her
great-grandchildren, Thomas Picotte, Brooke and Paige LaSota, and Garrett and
Kyle Bigelow. Condolences may be given to Katie's family
