Joseph J. Suzik, 85, of Hurley, died Sunday,
Sept. 20, 2009, in Hubert, N.C., where he had resided for the past
year. He was born June 14, 1924, in Ironwood, Mich.,
son of the late Paul and Susan (Borski) Suzik, and attended the K.P. Silberg
Grade School in Erwin Township. He entered the U.S. Army on March 8, 1943 and
served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, receiving,
among numerous medals and citations, four Bronze Battle Stars. Following his honorable discharge as a staff
sergeant on Jan. 10, 1946, Joe returned to the area and worked in the Peterson
Mine until it closed. He owned and operated the Starlite Motel and Bar in Hurley
for 32 years, retiring in 1988. Joe was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Hurley, and a life member of both Hurley American Legion Post 58 and Iron
County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1580. An avid bowler and golfer, he league
bowled at the Legion lanes in Hurley for many years and was a member of Eagle
Bluff Golf Club in Hurley. Joe was an outstanding husband, dad,
grandfather and uncle, and was well liked by everyone he met. He will be dearly
missed. On Jan. 10, 1948, he was married to the
former Claire E. Bertagnoli at St. Mary's Church in Hurley by the late Rev.
Peter Myer. Claire preceded him in death on July 16, 2001. Surviving are a son, Joseph M. (Suemi),
Hubert; four grandchildren, Joseph J. Suzik II, Hubert, Diana (Jason) Patten,
Raleigh, Barbara (Chucky) Dauberman, Emerald Isle, and Grant (Megan) Kimmel,
Tucson, Az.; one great-granddaughter, Lennox T. Dauberman; three sisters, Anne
Yale, Chicago, and Irene Rintala and Margaret Bluse, both of Hurley; a
son-in-law, Erick Erickson, Ironwood; a brother-in-law, Bill Vokolek, Hurley;
three sisters-in-law, Irma Romanowski, Hurley, Loretta Gerovac, Ironwood, and
Gloria (J.C. Miller) Penrose, Sun City, Az.; and numerous nieces and
nephews. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded
in death by a daughter, Lori Erickson, in 1981; five brothers, Anton, John,
Charles, Paul and Frank Suzik; and a sister, Helen Cedarstrom. Out of respect for Joe's wishes, cremation has
taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the
Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant. Rite of Committal will take place at the
church, where full military rites will be accorded by the combined Hurley
American Legion Post 58 and Iron County VFW Post 1580 Honor Guard. A reception will follow at the Iron Nugget in
downtown Hurley. Private inurnment will be in St. Mary's
Cemetery, Hurley. Relatives and friends may call at the church
