Joseph Dean Massoglia, 81, of
Kimball, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, in Hurley. He was born July 20, 1930, in Ironwood, son of
the late Joseph and Edla (Oja) Massoglia of Kimball, and attended Hurley
schools. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 in Germany during the
Korean Conflict. Joe was employed at the Penokee Mine and later
by Clairmont Transfer for 15 years. He was also a self-employed logger. He
retired in 1990 and enjoyed traveling to antique car shows and spending winters
in Yuma, Ariz. He was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church in Hurley and a life member of Iron County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
1580. Joe loved his family and was especially proud
of his granddaughters. On July 10, 1952, he was married to Helen
Rajala at the First Presbyterian Church in Hurley by the late Rev. Chester L.
Harries. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Dean, Ironwood, and
daughter, Julie (Yasu) Masaka, Kenosha; granddaughters, Emiko Joelen and Kimiyo
Marie Masaka, Kenosha; three brothers, Robert (Lorene), Saxon, Jack (Sharon),
Kenosha, and Terry, Superior; an aunt, Lucille Rosett, Florida; numerous nieces
and nephews; sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Charles) Hastings and Alice Anderson,
both of Ironwood, and Linda (Stan) Kallaak, Land O'Lakes; and a brother-in-law,
Dennis (Marjatta) Rajala, Salisbury, Md. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by a daughter-in-law, Cherie Massoglia, in 2010; sister-in-law, Judy (Van)
Dudley, in 1998; and brother-in-law, Richard Rajala, in 1999. Out of respect for Joe's wishes, cremation has
taken place. Memorial services will be held Friday, March
9, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at the First Presbyterian
Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Don Nickolson officiating. Committal will take place at the church, where
a flag presentation ceremony will be accorded by representatives of the combined
Hurley American Legion Post 58 and Iron Co. VFW Post 1580 Honor
Guard. Luncheon will follow at the Iron Nugget in
downtown Hurley. Private interment will be in the Hurley
Cemetery in the spring. Condolences may be given to Joe's family
