John "Jim" Rundquist, 86, a
lifelong Ironwood resident, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, in Hurley. He was born Aug. 29, 1925, in Ironwood, son of
the late John and Edith (Juntinen) Rundquist, attended Ironwood schools, and
graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1943. He then entered the U.S.
Army and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War
II, and was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1946. Following his discharge, he returned to
Ironwood and worked in the Montreal Mine until its closing, retiring from White
Pine Copper Co. in 1982. John was a former member of Holy Trinity
Catholic Church in Ironwood and current member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic
Church, and a member of Ironwood American Legion Post 5. He was active in
managing Ironwood Little League baseball for many years in his earlier years,
and was an avid golfer in his later years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and
skiing. On Aug. 3, 1946, he was married to Virginia
"Polly" Silver at Holy Trinity Catholic Church by the late Rev. Carl Petranek.
She preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 2004. Surviving are five sons, John (Cheryl), and
Donald, both of Ironwood, Ronald (Sandy), Elk Mound, Lon (Linda), Menasha, and
Thomas (Shelly), Chippewa Falls; seven grandchildren, John D. (Melanie)
Rundquist, Shelley (Nathan) Robinson, Stephanie (Cass) Hanson, Matthew Rundquist
(Melissa), Jenny (Cole) Klem, and Jessie (Mike) and Amy Rundquist; seven
great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold (Norma) Rundquist, Farmington, Mich.; and
several nieces and nephews. Out of respect for John's wishes, cremation
has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Friday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation in the St. Joseph Family
Room at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev.
Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant. Rite of Committal will take place in the St.
Joseph Family Room at the church, where full military honors will be accorded by
the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the parish
hall. Spring inurnment will be in Riverside
