Obituary

John P. Perkovich, 93, of Ironwood, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, in Ironwood.      He was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Ironwood, son of the late Victor and Manda (Mesich) Perkovich, and attended local schools. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Norrie in Ironwood prior to entering the U.S. Army and serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II.      Following his honorable discharge, John worked briefly in area mines, then moved to Milwaukee, where he was employed in sales. Returning to Ironwood in 1968, he worked in sales for various local businesses, retiring in the mid 1990's.      John was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood and the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He enjoyed oil painting, woodcarving and gardening, and was a dedicated family man.      On May 6, 1950, he married Catherine M. Klug at the St. John's Cathedral parsonage in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 1985.      Surviving are two sons, Peter (Barb), Bessemer, and Paul, Shakopee, Minn.; a daughter, Heidi (Barry) Klein, Ironwood; a grandson, Adam Perkovich, Keystone, Colo.; a brother, Roy, Ironwood; a niece, Michele (John) Stilson, Gurnee, Ill.; and a nephew, Michael Miheve, Mercer, Wis.      Besides his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by a grandson, Jan Perkovich, Oct. 27, 1995; two brothers, Fr. Perky S.C.J. and Mark Perkovich; and four sisters, Dorothy Miheve, Amelia Perkovich, Anne Perky, and Sister Roseaire OSF.      As per John's wishes, cremation has taken place.      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation in the St. Joseph Family Room beginning at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant.      Rite of Committal will take place in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, where a flag presentation ceremony will be accorded by representatives of the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.      Luncheon will follow in the parish hall.      Spring inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.      John's obituary can be viewed online and condolences given to his family at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood.
