John D. Oie, 60, of 509 N. Curry St., Ironwood, died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at his home. He was born Sept. 30, 1948, in Ironwood, son of Mary (Novak) and the late Clyde Oie, attended Central Grade School, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1966. John entered the U.S. Army on June 13, 1968, serving two tours of duty as a combat medic in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged on June 6, 1971. Following his discharge, he was employed as a deputy with the Gogebic County Sheriff's Department, retiring as Undersheriff in 1980. He was then a self-employed carpenter working throughout the area and was his mother's caregiver. He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. He especially enjoyed fishing on his boat on Lake Superior. Surviving are his mother, Mary, of Ironwood; two brothers, Robert (Barbara), Bessemer, and James (Patrice), Ironwood; his sister, Mary Beth Oie, Ironwood; three aunts, Ann Forslund and Margaret Novak, both of Hurley, and Lorraine Trombley, Ironwood; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his father, who died Oct. 29, 1982, John was preceded in death by a niece, Kirsten Myra "Sissy" Oie, on Jan. 14, 2008.
