John Joseph Mukavitz, 50 of Reno, NV, formerly of Ironwood, MI, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2017 in S. Lake Tahoe. He was born October 8, 1966, the son of William and Barbara Mukavitz. John graduated from Ironwood High School with the Class of 1984. He attended Northern Michigan University where he received a Masters Degree in English with a minor in Journalism. John worked as a reporter for the Houghton Gazette, along with a newspaper in Park City, Utah. At one time he published a local newspaper called Big Snow Country Travel Guide. He also taught Computer Science at Sierra Nevada College and at the University of Nevada in Reno. John later owned and operated his own business, Reno Technology, LLC. He was also employed by Erlach Computer Consulting as a Computer Engineer and by Panasonic, where he was a materials handler. John was married to Lisa Nissenbaum in 2000. He was an avid sportsman and played high school football, track, and raced downhill skiing. John also belonged to the NMU ski team where he skied as a member and later was an instructor. He was also a life guard and swimming instructor. He participated in many triathlons, and ran in the Paavo Nurmi ½ marathon and the Ironman Triathlon in Squaw Valley, Calif. He is survived by his father, William "Bobo"; his brother, Anthony "Tony" (Luann); his daughters, Lauren, age 12, and Jenna, age 10; his nephew, Cody (Taylor); and niece, Jessica; and many other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Mukavitz. In honor of John''s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. Fr. Robb Jurkovich will be the celebrant. John''s family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service in the St. Joseph''s Family Room at the church on Saturday. Inurnment will follow the mass at Sunset Acres Cemetery in Ironwood Township. The luncheon will follow at the Elk & Hound Restaurant in Ironwood.
