Obituary

John J. LaSota, 94, of Ironwood, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, in Ironwood.      John was born in Ironwood on Sept. 1, 1918, to the late John and Angeline (Jubek) LaSota.      He was married to Katherine Ann Bunjevac on Nov. 16, 1940, and recently celebrated 72 years of marriage.      John attended local schools and as a young man joined the C.C.C.'s and served in the western U.P. He worked in local iron ore mines until their closure and then worked on road construction. He was a Metropolitan Insurance agent and also began a career as a meat cutter and manager of several grocery stores in the surrounding areas. He also worked as a social worker for the Gogebic County Medical Care Facility. His last job before retirement was spent working for the State of Michigan as a caseworker for the Department of Social Services both in Houghton and Gogebic County.      After retirement, John was an actively involved member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, where he served as Eucharistic Minister. He enjoyed doing odd jobs as a handyman and also enjoyed gardening, cooking and sausage making.      John served on the Ironwood City Commission and was a past Mayor of the City of Ironwood. He also was a past member and chairman of the Gogebic County Board of Supervisors and was a member of the Gogebic-Ontonagon Community Action Agency Board of Directors.      Survivors include his wife Katherine, of Ironwood; son, John P. (Margaret), Ontonagon; three grandchildren, Ann (Doug) Picotte, Milwaukee, James LaSota, Shoreview, Minn., and Amy (Mike) Bigelow, Iron River; five great-grandchildren, Thomas Picotte, Brooke and Paige LaSota, and Garrett and Kyle Bigelow; four sisters, Anne Keranen, Hurley, Wis., Helen Struble, Milwaukee, Margaret Lechman, Schiller Park, Ill., and Sister Betty Dedo, Stevens Point, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank, Joseph and Paul.      John will be remembered for his generosity to his family and caring for his wife Katherine for many years.      Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has taken place and private services will be held.      Spring interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.      Honorary pallbearers will be John's grandchildren, Ann Picotte, James LaSota and Amy Bigelow; and great-grandchildren, Thomas Picotte, Brooke and Paige LaSota, and Garrett and Kyle Bigelow.      Condolences may be given to John's family online at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements have been entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood.
