Jerome A. "Jerry" Gulan, 76,
of Mission, Texas, and summertime resident of Hurley, Wis., died unexpectedly
Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Aspirus Grand View Hospital in
Ironwood. He was born Sept. 15, 1935, in Ironwood, son
of Leone (Sawicki) and the late Anton Gulan, attended St. Mary's Grade School in
Hurley, and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in 1953. He then worked
locally in logging with his father for a short time. On June 4, 1955, Jerry was married to the
former Martha J. Rajala of Montreal, Wis. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Hurley by the late Monsignor Michael Prock. They moved to Two Harbors, Minn.
where Jerry was employed by Reserve Mining Co. in Silver Bay, Minn. for many
years. Upon his retirement as a supervisor in 1989, they moved to Maple Grove,
Minn., and had resided in Mission for the past 12 years. Jerry was a
member of Our Lady of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Mission, Holy Spirit
Catholic Church in Two Harbors, and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Hurley. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council in Silver Bay and
the Moose Lodge in Two Harbors. He loved to golf, fish, read and work crossword
puzzles, was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, and liked a good
beer. He especially enjoyed being a super grandpa fan for his grandchildren's
extracurricular activities. S urviving are
his wife, Martha, of 57 years; two sons, Scott (Sheryl), Charlotte, N.C., and
Mark (Paula), Maple Grove; a daughter, JerriLynn (Steven) Johnson, Maple Grove;
six grandchildren, Cory (Heidi) Johnson, Fargo, N.D., Tiffany Johnson, and
Matthew and Anna Gulan, all of Maple Grove, and Christine and Jacob Gulan,
Charlotte; his mother, Leone Gulan, Hurley; three brothers, Larry, Ironwood,
Gene (Kay), Wausau, Wis., and Tony (Jeanne), Shell Lake, Wis.; numerous nieces
and nephews; and many close friends in Mission who he considered his
family. Besides his father, Jerry was preceded in
death by a sister, Cathryn Foster, in 1957; and sister-in-law, Sally Gulan, in
2005. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Friday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM,
celebrant. Luncheon will follow in the parish
hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to
St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hurley, or Our Lady of Holy Rosary Catholic Church,
