Obituary

Jeanette C. Lahtinen, 91, of 515 E. Vaughn St., Ironwood, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, in Ironwood.      The former Jeanette C. Durand was born Oct. 27, 1919, in Gile, Wis., daughter of the late Fred and Sophie (Wenas) Durand, attended grade school in Gile and Montreal, and graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley. She attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Ashland, Wis. and became an Accredited Record Technician, certified by the American Medical Record Association.      She was employed as nurse/receptionist for Allen C. Gorrilla, M.D. in downtown Ironwood, and was Director of Medical Record Services at Grand View Hospital, retiring in June 1981. She then was a medical record consultant at Villa Maria Health & Rehabilitation Center in Hurley and Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield, retiring in Nov. 1986.      Jeanette was a life-long member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, the Salem Choir, and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (WELCA), and was a former Sunday School teacher. She was a past member of the American Medical Record Association and its component, the Michigan Medical Record Association; past president of the Upper Peninsula District of the Michigan Medical Record Association; past member of St. Joseph Hospital Nurses Alumni Association and Allied Health Care Services-Gogebic Community College; charter member and past president of the Grand View Hospital Auxiliary; past member of Eagle Bluff Country Club; a gold star sister with the Auxiliaries to Hurley American Legion Post 58 and Iron County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1580; and a member of the Range Diabetes Association and Ben's Breakfast Bunch.      On July 3, 1940, she was married to Leo H. Lahtinen at Salem Lutheran Church by the late Rev. Carl Brostrom. Leo preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1987.      Surviving are a daughter, Carole (Bruce) Eppolite, and son, Fredrick (Sandra), both of Ironwood; five grandchildren, Lorie (Bob) Janssen, Green Bay, Wis., Jeffrey (Tami) Eppolite, Nokesville, Va., Marisa Kaukola (Mark), Ishpeming, and Travis Lahtinen and Cassie Lahtinen (Nathan), both of Marquette; seven great-grandchildren, Zachary and Joshua Janssen, Kayla, Korey and Kadie Kaukola, Dawson Reid Eppolite and Courtney Brooke Eppolite; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Ellen Santini, of Ironwood.      Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Staff Sgt. Frederick Durand and Douglas Durand; a sister, Grace Collins; two nephews, Douglas Collins and James Douglas Durand; two nieces, Mary Grace Rahn and JoAnn Bergquist; brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Joe and Ivey Zarimba, Elaine Durand, Arthur Collins, and Eino and Lorraine Lahtinen; and special friend, Guido Gentile.      Out of respect for Jeanette's wishes, cremation has taken place.      Memorial services will be held Friday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m., at Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with the Rev.
