Obituary

Jean Champion Ryan, 82, of 500 E. Midland Ave., Ironwood, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, in Ironwood, with her family by her side. The former Jean Strand was born Jan. 7, 1925, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Erick and Lempi (Stolt) Strand, attended Ironwood schools, and graduated from L.L. Wright High School in 1943. She was employed at Montgomery Ward Co. in downtown Ironwood for ten years, and as a teller at MFC First National Bank, also for ten years, retiring in March of 1991. Jean was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood. She enjoyed playing smear, knitting, traveling, sewing and gardening. She was married to William Champion on Sept. 5, 1945, in Austin, TX. He preceded her in death on June 5, 1974. She then married William Ryan on Oct. 17, 1991, in Bessemer. He survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert, Appleton, Wis.; three daughters, Bonnie (Phillip) Kukkonen, Hancock, Kathleen (Patrick) Steiger, Bessemer, and Janis (Ronald) Steffen, Neenah, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Kristi (John) Kajander, Erik (Karen) Kukkonen, Cami (Matt) Moberg, Timothy (Wendy) Steiger, Tina (Bill) Hipenbecker, and Holley and Pierce Steffen; six great grandchildren, Kanon Kajander, Trevor, Kyle and David Kukkonen, Coral Moberg and Patrick Hipenbecker; a sister, Eva M. Johnson, Ironwood; brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Elvie Strand, John and Elvina Ryan, and Kathleen and Tomas Santos, all of Ironwood, James Ryan, Omaha, Neb., Jean Ferris, Onalaska, Wis., and Rita Ryan, Federal Way, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and first husband, Jean was preceded in death by two brothers, Walfred and Robert Strand, and a sister, Eleanor Heikkila. Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m., at Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Francis Strong officiating. Committal services and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall immediately upon return from the cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday. Pallbearers will be Robert Champion, Phillip and Erik Kukkonen, Patrick and Tim Steiger, and Ronald Steffen.
