Jean I. Guthrie, 91, of
Ironwood, Mich., died Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Villa Maria Health and
Rehabilitation Center in Hurley. She was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Sand Coulee,
Mont., the daughter of the late Ronald and Evelyn (Morrill) Guthrie, and came to
Ironwood in 1925, where she graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1939.
She then attended Woodward Business College in Ironwood and was employed as
a secretary in Kalamazoo, Mich. Jean entered the U.S. Navy (WAVES) on Nov.4,
1943, serving stateside during World War II, and was honorably discharged as a
yeoman third class on March 1, 1946. Following her discharge, she was employed
as a secretary with the U.S. Graves Registration Department in Paris for one
year, and in secretarial work for Otis Elevator Co.in New Jersey. She then lived
in Kenosha for many years, returning to Ironwood in 1990. In her younger years,
she was an excellent artist. Surviving are two sisters, Marian (Tom) Wasley
and Gael Anderson, both of Ironwood; and numerous nieces and
nephews. Graveside services and committal will be held
Tuesday, July 23, at 2 p.m., in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, with the Rev. Kurt
Kovanen officiating. Full military honors will follow, accorded by
the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Jean's obituary
