Jane A. Spencer, 95, a
lifelong Mercer, Wis. resident, died Monday, July 30, 2012, at Westgate Nursing,
Rehabilitation, and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood. The former Jane A. Weiland was born Aug. 21,
1916, in Milwaukee, daughter of the late Walter and Anna (Hermann) Weiland, and
came to Mercer at age six, where she attended grade school and graduated from
Mercer High School in 1934. She married Merton A. Vaughn on June 11, 1934,
in Bessemer. He preceded her in death on April 29, 1955. She then married Earl "Spence" Spencer on Feb.
15, 1958, in Palatine, Ill. He preceded her in death on Feb. 1,
2001. Jane did housecleaning, worked at Beaver Lodge
in Mercer, and together with her husband Spence, owned and operated Spence and
Jane's Restaurant, along with several other businesses in Mercer, for many years
until her retirement. She was a member of the Mercer United
Methodist Church and the Presque Isle, Wis. American Legion Auxiliary. She
raised chickens, and enjoyed handwork and painting. Surviving are two sons, Merton (Rachel)
Vaughn, Medford, Wis., and Butch (Mary) Vaughn, Mercer; a daughter, Marge
Kreger, Sun Prairie, Wis.; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husbands, Jane was
preceded in death by a sister, Vera Brandt, on March 29, 2012. Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has
taken place and no services will be held. Private inurnment will be in the Mercer
Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the
Mercer United Methodist Church, 2679 Co. Highway J, Mercer, WI
