James J. "Hauty" Hautanen,
51, of Ironwood, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at home, surrounded by his loving
family, following a three-year battle with lymphoma. He was born June 26, 1961, in Ironwood, son of
Jean (Goines) and the late Jacob "Jack" Hautanen, attended local schools, and
graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1979. He then lived and worked in
Colorado and California for several years before returning to Ironwood and
working at Indianhead Mountain and in carpet installation with his
father-in-law, Mike Magdziak. For the past five years, he was a self-employed
carpet installer in the range area. Jim was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in
Ironwood, the Aurora Athletic Club, and the Saxon Harbor Boating Club. He loved
camping at Saxon Harbor, his garden, fly tying, and fishing with his buddies
Mickey, Bart, Tim and Paul. He also enjoyed cooking and baking. Jim was a
wonderful husband, dad, son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, and
will be dearly missed by all who loved him. He was married to the former Wendy S. Magdziak
of Ironwood on Oct. 12, 1991, at Zion Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Lauri O. Maki
Jr. Wendy survives. Also surviving are three sons, Nathan Magdziak
(Amanda Rimkus) and Alex Hautanen, both of Marquette, and Travis Hautanen,
Ironwood; his mother, Jean Hautanen, Erwin Township; brother, Jacob "Jake", Ironwood;
sister, Joy (Thomas) Pelissero, Hastings, Minn.; father-and mother-in-law, Mike
and Linda Magdziak, and sister-and brothers-in-law, Kim and Steve Kieber and
Mike Magdziak, all of Ironwood; a nephew, Mitch Kieber, and four nieces, Megan
and Monica Maki, Ashley Kieber, and Josie Magdziak; and his faithful labrador retriever companions, Shadow and
Pudgy.
Out of respect for Jim's wishes, cremation has
taken place. Memorial services will be held Thursday, Jan.
3, at 11 a.m, preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 100 W.
Midland Ave., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Kurt Kovanen, pastor,
officiating. Luncheon will follow at the Aurora Athletic
Club in Ironwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials are
