Obituary

Jacob W. "Jack" Hautanen, 80, of E-5589 Pioneer Rd., Erwin Township, Ironwood, died Wednesday morning, April 15, 2009, in his home. He was born Sept. 6, 1928, in Ironwood, son of the late John and Matilda (Jackson) Hautanen, attended Erwin Central School, and graduated from L.L. Wright High School in 1946. He entered the U.S. Army on March 27, 1951, serving in Korea, where he received the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal and the Merit Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant on March 13, 1953. Following his discharge, Jack returned to Ironwood and was employed in bridge construction in the Upper Peninsula by the John K. Jackson Co., Caspian Construction and Thornton Construction, retiring due to ill health in Nov. 1964. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood, where he served on various committees on the church council. He served on the Gogebic Co. Soil Conservation board of directors and the board of directors of the Gogebic Co. Transit Authority, and was a member of Ironwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1823. He was also a 4-H leader in Erwin Township for many years. Jack loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. On April 3, 1954, he was united in marriage to the former Jean A. Goines at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood by the late Rev. H.P. Esala. Jean survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jacob and James (Wendy), both of Ironwood, and a daughter, Joy Maki, of Erwin Township; five grandchildren, Megan, Monica, Alex, Travis and Nathan; a sister, Florence Hautanen, and a brother-in-law, Melvin Luoma, both of Ironwood; and many other relatives and friends. Besides his parents, Jack was preceded in death by a brother, John; a sister, Helen Luoma, March 29, 2009; and a sister-in-law, Lucy Hautanen. At the family's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 18, at 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 100 W. Midland Ave., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Francis Strong officiating. Committal will take place at the church, where full military rites will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Roy and Ray Pumala, John Suutala, Mark Luoma, Alex and Travis Hautanen, and Nathan Magdziak. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Regional Hospice, Zion Lutheran Church, or the Salvation Army.
