Obituary

Isabel S. Mittelstaedt, 94, of Toledo, Ohio passed away March 31, 2009 after a brief illness. She was born March 12, 1915 in Hurley, Wis., to Pangrazio (Frank) and Angeline (Ochietti) Stella. Isabel graduated from Hurley High School and worked in Hurley as a legal secretary. In 1946, she married Earl Mittelstaedt, a reporter for the Ironwood, Mich. Daily Globe, after his discharge from the Army. They moved to Toledo in 1947 after he was hired by the Toledo Blade as the telegraph editor. She was a dedicated mother and housewife, raising her two sons and her nephew John, and was well known to family and friends as a superb Italian cook and artisan baker. In the 1970's-80's she worked as a grade school monitor at St. Patrick's of Heatherdowns School. In later years, she enjoyed working in her garden and flower beds. Independent and active until her last month, she enjoyed her older years in relatively good health. Isabel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl, her brother, Louis Stella and her sister, Margaret (Stella) Connor. Surviving are her sons, Robert E. Mittelstaedt and David J. (Cheryl) Mittelstaedt; nephews, John L. (Mary) Turkal and David Stella; nieces, Ellen Darquart and Suzanne Metz; and many great nieces and nephews. The family would especially like to thank staff and physicians of Toledo Hospital who provided encouragement and support in Isabel's last hours. Thanks also to the caring, compassionate home health aides from Deana's Helping Hands and staff and physicians at St. Luke's Hospital, who supported her through a difficult three-week period after a stroke, days of rehabilitation and struggle to recover. Isabel thanks all who made her life so pleasant and wonderful throughout her 94 years. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant, on Saturday, April 25, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hurley, at 11 a.m., where the family will be receiving friends one hour prior. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley, at a later date. To view Isabel's obituary online, sign the guestbook and express condolences, visit mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.
