Obituary

Ileana M. Babich, 80, of 201 5th Ave. No., Hurley, Wis., died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, in Ironwood.      The former Ileana Morichetti was born June 20, 1929, in Hurley, daughter of the late Amadeo and Theresa (Maorini) Morichetti, attended St. Mary's Grade School there, and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School.      She was married to John J. Babich in September of 1946 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley by the late Rev. Peter Myer. Together with her husband John, she owned and operated Johnny's Bar on Silver St. in the late 1940's and early 1950's. John preceded her in death on May 14, 1964.      Ileana was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley where she volunteered for many church activities in her earlier years. She enjoyed traveling and loved taking her yearly trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas and California. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed Friday night fish fries with her friends.      Surviving are her daughter, Barbara (Gary) Gillingham, Poway, Calif.; three grandchildren, Michael Babich, Bessemer, Christina (Mark) Bolen, Ironwood, and Lesley Gillingham, Poway; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; Jim Lutey's son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Theresa Lutey, of Painesville, Ohio, and their children, Sarah and Amanda; her neighbor and dear friend, Linda Barto, of Hurley; and her very close friend, Mary Nantell, of Ironwood.      Besides her parents and husband, Ileana was preceded in death by a son, John Paul Babich, on Dec. 22, 1987; her companion of 30 years, Jim Lutey, on March 25, 1997; a brother, Serafino "Suds" Morichetti, Sept. 3, 2000; and a sister, Frieda Sargent, Oct. 2, 1996.      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant.      Rite of Committal and interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley.      A luncheon reception will be held at the Liberty Bell Chalet in downtown Hurley immediately upon return from the cemetery.      Friends may call at the church from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday.      Pallbearers will be Ileana's four nephews, Richard, Robert and Randy Ahnen and Mark Marczak, and Dan Walowinski and Greg Loreti.      Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 404 Iron St., Hurley, Wis. 54534.      To view Ileana's obituary online, sign the guestbook and express condolences, visit mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are with McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home Inc., Ironwood.
