Obituary

Helia G. Longhini, 95, of Ironwood, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, in Hurley. The former Helia Haavisto was born Dec. 26, 1911, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Henry and Hilja (Saari) Haavisto, attended Ironwood schools, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1930. She then was employed as a waitress in Detroit for several years. Helia was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood and a former member of the Ironwood Elks Lodge Auxiliary. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was married to William J.Longhini on Feb. 28, 1938 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late Msgr. J.B. Moriarty. William preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1980. Surviving are a son, Richard, Manitowoc, Wis.; two daughters, Marguerite (Wilfred) Legault, Brookfield, Wis., and Carol (Arthur) DaPra, Racine, Wis.; twelve grandchildren, Craig (Deanna) Legault, Rockford, Ill.; Todd (Kathy) Legault, Bloomington, Minn.; Michelle (Gregg) Ritter, Duluth, GA; Jeffrey DaPra, Ironwood; Gregory (Monica) DaPra, Racine; Susan (John) Cantele, Wichita, Kans.; Patrick (Judy) DaPra, Spring, Tex.; Steven (Michelle) DaPra, Katy, Tex.; Lisa (Robert) Hagenow, Manitowoc; Eric (Carrie) Longhini, Boulder, Colo.; Chad Longhini, Ironwood; and Michael (Lori) Longhini, Cottage Grove, Wis.; 18 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Longhini, Ironwood; two sisters, Elsie Hnizda, Huntington Woods, and Ingrid Taylor, Royal Oak; a sister-in-law, Rosemarie DeFelice, Wooster, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Helia was preceded in death by a son, William H., Dec. 28, 1994; a daughter-in-law, Rita Longhini, Nov. 18, 2003; two brothers, Henry and Richard Haavisto; and a sister, Aileen Haavisto. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant. Rite of Committal will be in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, with luncheon to follow in the parish hall. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church one hour prior to the Funeral Mass on Tuesday. Pallbearers will be Helia's grandsons, to include Craig and Todd Legault, Jeffrey, Gregory, Patrick and Steven DaPra, and Eric, Chad and Michael Longhini. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Peace Adopt-A-Student Program.
