Helen E. Massoglia, 78, of
Kimball, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, in her home, surrounded by her loving
family, following a courageous battle with breast cancer. The former Helen Rajala was born Dec. 17,
1933, in Ironwood Township., Mich., daughter of the late Henry and Edith
(Kaikku) Rajala. She attended Roosevelt Grade School and graduated from Luther
L. Wright High School in 1952. She was united in marriage to Joseph
D. Massoglia on July 10, 1952, at the First
Presbyterian Church in Hurley, by the late Rev. Chester L. Harries. Joe preceded
her in death on March 6, 2012. Helen attended Gogebic Community College for
two years and graduated from Northland College in Ashland with a degree in
teaching in 1969. She then taught in Iron Belt for one year and at Southside
School in Hurley for the remainder of her career, retiring in 1991. She was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church in Hurley, where she formerly served on the church Session and taught
Sunday School. She and Joe enjoyed wintering in Yuma, Ariz. for 18 years. She
also enjoyed reading and spending time with family and friends. Helen loved her
family and was especially proud of her children and granddaughters. Surviving are a son, Dean (Deb Picon), of
Ironwood; daughter, Julie (Yasu) Masaka, Kenosha; two granddaughters, Emiko
Joelen and Kimiyo Marie Masaka, Kenosha; three sisters, Lorraine Hastings and
Alice Anderson, both of Ironwood, and Linda (Stan) Kallaak, Land O' Lakes; a
brother, Dennis (Marjatta) Rajala, Salisbury, Md.; sister-in-law, Mary Beth
(Jim) Merritt, Ironwood Township; brothers-in-law, Van Dudley, Duluth, Ga., Jack
(Sharon) Massoglia, Kenosha, Robert (Lorene) Massoglia, Saxon, and Terry
Massoglia, Superior; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Helen was
preceded in death by a sister, Judy Dudley, in 1998; brother, Richard Rajala,
in 1999; and daughter-in-law, Cherie Massoglia, in 2010. Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has
taken place. Memorial services will be held Monday, Dec. 3,
at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church
in Hurley, with the Rev. Don Nickolson officiating. Committal and interment will follow in the
Hurley Cemetery. Luncheon will be served at the Iron Nugget in
downtown Hurley immediately upon return from the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to
the First Presbyterian Church, 200 4th Ave. S., Hurley, WI 54534. Condolences may be given to Helen's family
