Helen E. Luoma, 78, of 755 Midway Ave. Ironwood, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, in Ironwood. She was born May 8, 1930, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Johannes and Matilda (Kinnunen) Hautanen. She attended the Erwin Central School in Erwin Township and graduated from L.L. Wright High School in 1948. Helen was employed in Chicago at Montgomery Ward, the National Metals Bank and the J.C. Penney Co. in Ironwood, retiring in 2001. She was also the secretary at Trinity Lutheran Church since 1968. She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School for 35 years. She sang in the choir for 52 years, and was a member of Trinity's Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Helen was a 4-H leader in Erwin Township for 40 years and also was a member of the Gogebic County 4-H Council. Her hobbies included traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. Helen married Melvin W. Luoma at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood on November 28, 1951. He survives. Also surviving are a son, Mark (Virginia), Park Falls, Wis.; daughters, Suzanne (Gregg) Raisanen, Alexandria, Minn., and Colleen (Kevin) Corcoran, Ishpeming.; grandchildren Amy and John Luoma, Jennie and Abby Stauffer, Kurt and Sean Corcoran and Amber Backon.; a great-grandson Kai Backon and a great-granddaughter Bailey Corcoran; a brother, Jacob (Jean) Hautanen, Erwin Township, and a sister, Florence Hautanen, Ironwood. She is also survived by other relatives and friends. Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by a brother John Hautanen, a sister-in-law, Lucy Hautanen and a grandson, Matthew Luoma. In accordance with Helen's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held Friday, April 3, 2009 at 11 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5104 E. Margaret St., Ironwood, with the Rev. Wesley Baumeister officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 5-8 pm on Thursday and from 10 am until service time on Friday.
