Helen K. Lantta, 91, a lifelong Kimball resident, died
Wednesday, July 25, 2012, in her home with family present. She was born in Kimball to Finnish immigrant
parents, the late William and Ellen (Etula) Kivi, on March 29, 1921, and
attended school in Meadville and Hurley. On April 17, 1937, she was married to Ray
Lantta at the Zion Lutheran parsonage by the Rev. Jacob Hirvi. Ray preceded her
in death on Sept. 22, 2000. She was a life member of Zion Lutheran Church
in Ironwood, Mich., WELCA, and the Rachel Circle. She was also a member of Kimball
Homemakers, was a 4-H leader for 25 years, and loved to spend time at Island
Lake. Helen was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. She
welcomed everyone who graced her doorstep. Everyone loved visiting her and
listening to her stories and memories. She will be so missed by
all. Surviving are two sons, Rey, of Merino, Colo.,
and Dean (Teri Hoffman), Ironwood, two daughters, Marion Koski, Mellen,
and Sharon (Larry) Morken, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; daughter-in-law, Kathy
Lantta, Hurley; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 10
great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helmi Anderson and Helvie Pelkola, both
of Kimball; four stepgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Helen was
preceded in death by a son, John; granddaughter, Cynthea Lantta; son-in-law, Ray
Koski; brothers, Carl, Sulo and Arthur Kivi; sisters, Mayme and June in
infancy, Sylvia (Ray) Swanson, Helga (George) Wycklendt, Ellen (Sam) Skoviera,
and Edna (Charles) Balistreri; sisters-in-law, Taimi, Marge and Vienna; and
brothers-in-law, Eugene Pelkola and Jim Anderson. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held Thursday, Aug.
2, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 500
E. Midland Ave., in Ironwood, with Pastor Peggy A. Rose, officiant, and Rev. Dr.
John Geach, homilist. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship
hall. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Iron
Belt, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may
