The Reverend H. LeRoy Peterson, 84, of 100 W. Michigan Ave.,
Ironwood, retired local Lutheran minister, died Tuesday, Sept. 29,
2009, in Ironwood.
He
was born July 8, 1925, in Berlin, N.D., son of the late J. Harry and
Evva (Norman) Peterson. His elementary education was received at Berlin
Public School and he graduated from Berlin High School in 1943. LeRoy
served stateside in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II from
1943-1946. Following his honorable discharge as an aviation cadet, he
attended Gustavus Adolphus College and N.D.A.C. before entering into
business with his mother. After eight years in the restaurant business
he was employed as a sales representative for Shirley Onstad Plumbing
and Heating Corp. of Fargo, N.D. It
was at this time that the Lord called LeRoy to study for the ministry.
He completed his academic requirements and was graduated from Concordia
Theological Seminary, Springfield, Ill., on May 30, 1968. His year of
vicarage was served at Grace Lutheran Church in Waterloo and Jessup,
Iowa. Rev.
Peterson served as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Lewisville, Minn.,
St. Paul Lutheran Church in Madison, Wis., Concordia Lutheran Church in
Red Wing, Minn., Faith Lutheran Church in Mercer, Wis., and Trinity
Lutheran Church in Ironwood, retiring in 1992. He
was married to the former Sigrid Sigurdson of Cavalier, N.D., on July
4, 1947, at First Lutheran Church in Fargo. She preceded him in death
on July 6, 1990. He
was then married to Dolores "Dolly" (Mattson) Carlson on June 6, 1992,
at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood. LeRoy and Dolly moved to
Butternut, Wis., where they owned and operated the Butternut Campground
for two and a half years before moving to Mellen, Wis., in 1995. They
returned to Ironwood in 2000. LeRoy loved hunting and fishing, and was a former member of Ironwood American Legion Post 5. Surviving
are his wife, Dolores "Dolly;" four sons, Jimmie (Char), St. Paul,
Minn., Robert (Susan), Granville, Mass., and Gary (Paula), and Jeffrey
(Chrissy), both of Madison, Wis.; a daughter, Lou Rae Dierks,
Shorewood, Ill.; three step-children, Gary (Ginny) Carlson, San Jose,
Calif., Randy (Mary) Carlson, Golden Valley, Minn., and Sharon (Tom)
Ravelli, Ironwood; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria
(Elmer) Kosse, Carrington, N.D., and June (James) Larson, Fargo, N.D.;
and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and first wife, LeRoy was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Gene Dierks, in 2001. Funeral
services will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran
Church, 5104 E. Margaret St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Bo Baumeister
officiating. Committal
will take place at the church, where a flag presentation ceremony will
be accorded by members of the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor
Guard. Interment will be in Advari Cemetery, Svold, N.D. Relatives and friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Anthony Peterson, Kevin Dierks, Melvin Luoma, Jim Meunier, Mark Hanson and Dave Harmon. In lieu of flowers,
memorials are preferred to the Trinity Lutheran Church Renovation Fund,
5104 E. Margaret St., Ironwood, MI 49938, or the Advari Cemetery Fund,
