Obituary

Guido J. Gentile, 91, of Hurley, and formerly of Mercer and Ironwood, MI, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in Ironwood. He was born April 21, 1917, in Ironwood, son of the late Frank and Theresa (Stella) Gentile, attended Hurley schools, and graduated from Hurley High School in 1935. While in high school, he was captain of the varsity basketball team. He then attended Gogebic Community College for one year. Guido went into the wholesale beer and soft drink distributing business in Hurley and Ironwood in 1938, and also operated the Bravo Wine bottling plant in Mercer from 1952 to his retirement in 1980. From 1965 to 1993, he operated the Lake Vue Trailer Court on Big Pike Lake in Mercer. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Guido entered boot camp at Farragut, Idaho and Terminal Island, Calif., and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre aboard the U.S.S. Devastator, Mine Sweeper, A.M. 318, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 14, 1945. On his 90th birthday, he received a commemorative World War II medallion issued by the Northern Mariana Islands to U.S troops who fought in the Battles of Saipan and Tinian. Guido was a member and past five-year commander of Mercer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9536, a member of Hurley American Legion Post 58, Eagle Bluff Golf Club, Hurley, and Mellen Golf Club , Mellen, the Quattro Abbruzzi Society, having served as past president, the Town of Mercer Advisory Board, and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and twice shot a hole-in-one, in Hurley and at Trout Lake. In his younger years, he played softball on the Range for many years, and also enjoyed pitching horseshoes, fishing, hunting and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending winters in Panama City Beach, Florida. Guido will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. On Aug. 24, 1940, he was married to the former Grace Ann Olds of Montreal, Wis. in Ironwood. She preceded him in death on July 1, 1989. Surviving are three sons, Roger (Linda), Pence, and David (Nancy), and Michael (Linda), both of Mercer; nine grandchildren, Stacy Gentile, Appleton, Holly Gentile (Mike Gray), Hurley, Sarah Gentile, Mercer, Gino Gentile, Hurley, Kathryn Gentile, Mercer, Jennifer (Luke) Tornow, Manitowish Waters, Melissa Gentile (Andrew Hull), Merrill, Julee Gentile (William Donner), Lake Tomahawk, and Michael Guido Gentile II (Andrea Bellaver), Phoenix, AZ; two great-granddaughters, Dakota Jane Tornow, Manitowish Waters, and GraceLee Rose Gentile Hull, Merrill; a sister, Viola Allen, Madison; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend and companion, Jeannette Lahtinen, of Ironwood. Besides his parents and wife, Guido was preceded in death by two brothers, Ted and Nick; and three sisters, Rose Egizi, Clara Petranek and Doris Gerken. Out of respect for Guido's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant . Rite of Committal will take place at the church, where full military rites will be accorded by the combined Mercer VFW Post 9536 and Hurley American Legion Post 58 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Inurnment will be in the Mercer Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church one hour prior to Mass on Friday.
