Gordon R. "Gordy" Thomas, 85, of 210 9th Ave. No., Hurley, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, in Hurley. He was born April 28, 1923, in Hurley, son of the late James and Katherine (Sullivan) Thomas, attended Hurley schools, graduating from Lincoln High School there in 1941. On Aug. 18, 1945, he was married to the former Betty Stevens at the First Presbyterian Church parsonage in Hurley by the late Rev. C.L. Harries. Betty preceded him in death on May 22, 2003. Gordy worked in the Cary Mine until it closed in 1964, and retired from White Pine Copper Co. as a supervisor in 1975. He was a past member of the Hurley City Council and the Hurley Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed bowling in his younger years and hunting and fishing. Surviving are a son, Gary (Terri), Wausau; a daughter, Bonnie (Bunny) DeRizzo, Hurley; five grandchildren, Jason DeRizzo (Amber Schouweiler), Merrill, Shane DeRizzo, Anchorage, Alaska, and Nicole, Emily and Kassandra Thomas, Wausau; two great-grandchildren, Jamie and Nicholas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Gordy was preceded in death by brothers, Frank, Floyd, Jerry, William, Steve, George, Marion, Ted and Charles; and sisters, Katherine Marie in infancy, Margaret Lundgren and Esther Dahl. In accordance with Gordy's wishes , cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 27, at 2 p.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with Deacon Russell Lundgren, officiating. Private inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
