Gordon S. "Gordie" Soine, 77,
of 5624 W. U.S. Highway 2, Town of Kimball, Hurley, Wis., died Tuesday, Dec. 29,
2009, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, with his family by his
side. He was born May 18, 1932, in Iron Belt, Wis.,
son of the late Sanford and Mayme (Bay) Soine, attended Roosevelt Grade School
in Montreal, Wis. and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in Hurley in 1950.
He then attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich. on an
ROTC scholarship through the Montreal Mine, receiving a degree in mining
engineering in 1954. Following graduation, Gordie was commissioned
as a second lieutenant and served four years in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot. He then
spent four years in the Army Reserves and was activated during the Cuban Missile
Crisis in 1962. Following his reserve obligation, he returned
to Hurley and worked in the Montreal Mine until the mine closed. He was employed
in the Reserve Mine in Babbitt, Minn. for three years, then returned to Hurley
and worked for Mesabi Blasting, Division of Ireco Chemicals, as a blasting
specialist, and Dashveyor Co. at White Pine Copper Co., developing a fast
loading system for ore. Together with Pete DeRubeis of Hurley, he started Lakewood Surveyors, operating
the company for many years. During that time, he attended Gogebic Community
College where he learned computer programming, then taught construction trades
and drafting there for ten years. He was employed as a property tax
assessor in Iron County under the Lakewood
Surveyor name up until the time of his death. Gordie was a member of the Kimball Men's Club
and Eagle Bluff Golf Club, and was one of the original designers of the golf
course. His work, his sense of humor and his "gift of gab" were his hobbies. He
will be dearly missed by many. On Nov. 27, 1954, he was married to the former
Doris J. Valle at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley by the late Rev. Msgr.
Michael Prock. Doris survives. Also surviving are two sons, Mark (Terry),
Sturtevant, Wis., and Dan (Karen), Iron Belt; three daughters, Julie (Dan)
Siirila, Ironwood, Mich., Pat (Randy) Nelson, Ankeny, Iowa, and Mary Jo
Rodriguez, Ruidoso, N.M.; 13 grandchildren, Seth,Tara, Chase (Lindsay),
and Shawna Soine, Joshua and Jessica Soine, Dayle (Dave) Bugalski, Miquel
Kauppi, Callie Siirila, Adam Snarski, and Tyler, Tiffany and Neko Nelson; four
sisters, Genna Scamfer, Pengilly, Minn., Gail Patenoster, Hurley, Minerva (Dan)
Stephani, Gile, Wis., and Karen (Bob) Turk, Rhinelander, Wis.; a sister-in-law,
Elsie (Carl) Kaffine, Eveleth; and numerous niece and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by a grandson, Christopher Soine, on Oct. 28, 1979. Out of respect for Gordie's wishes, cremation
has taken place. Memorial services will be held Monday, Jan. 4,
at 11 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in
Ironwood, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Hurley, officiating. A flag presentation ceremony will follow,
accorded by representatives of the combined Hurley American Legion Post 58 and
Iron Co. VFW Post 1580 Honor Guard. A reception
will be held at Tacconelli's in downtown Ironwood immediately following the
service. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. on
