Gloria G. Tousignant, 88, of
323 N. Douglas Blvd., Ironwood, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, in her home,
surrounded by her loving family. The former Gloria Ochis was born June 2, 1923,
in Bessemer, daughter of the late Joseph and Marguerite (Favero) Ochis, attended
Bessemer schools, and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in 1940. She then
attended St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. and the University of Michigan in Ann
Arbor. Gloria married Edward Tousignant Jr. on July
1, 1942, in Boston, Mass. She then became a homemaker and together with her
husband raised their family. Edward preceded her in death on Feb. 13,
1967. Following the death of her husband, Gloria
owned and operated Gloria's Boutique in Ironwood for 43 years, retiring in
2010. She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic
Church in Ironwood and was active in the Befrienders Program. She was also a
member and past president of the Gogebic and Iron Co. Paisano Club, a member of
the Red Hat Society, and formerly sang with the Sweet Adelines. She was involved
in organizing her Bessemer High School class reunions for many years and was
involved in PTA when her kids were in school. Gloria was voted Gogebic Co. Super
Senior of the Year by Bresnan Communications in 1997. Her personal ministry was
to visit people in area nursing homes and bring them candy baskets and good
cheer from the mid 1970's to the present. She lived by the motto: "Don't Just
Live-Shine!" Surviving are two sons, Brian (Beverly),
Ironwood, and Gregory "Gregorio", Detroit; two daughters, Michelle "Shelly" Tousignant
(Lisa Schmelzer), Winston, Ore., and Camille "Cammy" (Jim) Clark,
Fennville; seven grandchildren, Tammy Ruby, Ironwood, Tim Zanella, Hurley, Terra
(Gilbert) Worel, Kelso, Wash., Heather Svay, Sacramento, Calif., Angela Searle,
Holland, Mich., Amanda Clark, Garden City, Ks, and Alena Clark, Detroit; 10
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and
nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by a son, Edward Tousignant III, in July 1987; a sister,
Phyllis Marconeri; brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Louis Marconeri, Jean and John
Kopacz, and Lorraine and Tony DeMarte; and her beloved pet, her dog
Bogey. As per Gloria's wishes, cremation has taken
place. Memorial services will be held Friday, Jan. 6,
2012, at 7 p.m., preceded by visitation from 4 to 7 p.m., at the
McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev.
Darryl J. Pepin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to
the HOPE Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 261, Ironwood, Mich. 49938, or to the National
