Obituary

Glen Hawley "Joe" Carlson, 70, of Berea, Ky. and a former Ironwood, Mich. resident, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, from injuries sustained in an automobile-motorcycle accident on Nov. 1, 2008 in Berea. Joe was born Aug. 25, 1938, in Ironwood, son of the late Glen and Elizabeth "Betty" (Hawley) Carlson, and graduated from Johnson High School in North St. Paul, Minn. in 1956. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis, and pursued graduate studies at Harvard University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. Joe had been employed at Ironwood Plastics; the Gogebic County Family Independence Agency; and retired as Director of the Ironwood Carnegie Library. After retirement, he enjoyed substitute teaching at Ironwood area schools. He was a member of the Ironwood Historical Society and the Gogebic Range Geneology Society. He was also the author of two books, "The Murder of Andrew Sigler" and "The Unfortunate Dr. Webster". On Feb. 14, 1989, he was married to the former Andree LaMarche in Decatur, Ga. She survives. Also surviving are sons, Scot Carlson, Richmond, Ky., Eric Carlson, London, England, and Tom Derenthal, Marquette, Mich.; daughters, Leah (John) Murnane, Fitchburg, Ma., and Susy (Dennis) Lockhart, Marietta, Ga.; grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer Carlson, Patrick and Ryan Murnane, Robert and Danielle Derenthal, Camryn and Anthony Lockhart, and Ivey (Jason) Rohr; a great-granddaughter, Brianna Rohr; and his favorite aunts, Bernadette Carlson, Lake Gogebic, and Kathleen Codd, Ironwood. As an only child, Joe also cherished his numerous brothers-and-sisters-in-laws and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Derenthal. In accordance with Joe's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl Pepin, celebrant. Rite of Committal will take place in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, where full military rites will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard and the Gogebic-Iron Marine Detachment, Marine Corps League. Luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Relatives and friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry or the Ironwood Carnegie Library.
