Obituary

Gladys I. Siira, 87, of Ironwood, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, in Hurley, surrounded by her loving family.      The former Gladys Dyni was born March 11, 1924, in Mohawk, Mich., daughter of the late Charles and Ida (Oja) Dyni, attended grade school there, and graduated from Calumet High School in 1942. She then worked as a waitress and store clerk at the Kaleva Cafe in Hancock.      Gladys married John M. Siira on June 19, 1943, in Hancock, and came to Ironwood in 1949. John preceded her in death on March 10, 1999.      She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ironwood, its Martha Circle, and the Ladies Guild. She also belonged to the Norrie Grade School PTA in her younger years, and volunteered for the March of Dimes. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and baking, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.      Surviving are her children, Arlene (Richard) Sarkela, Silver City, N.M., Carole Wiedeman, Schofield, Joan (John) Minkin, Ironwood Township, and John (Barbara) Siira, Wakefield, Mich.; seven grandchildren; Melisa (Ian) Snoeberger, Eric Sarkela, Tina (Henry) Schultz, Shelley (Brian) Nelson, Tim Minkin, Theresa (Brian) Amos, and Alyson (Jason) Travis; eight great-grandchildren, April McNatt (Mike Castillo), Kevin Snoeberger, Taylor Schultz, Colton, Kyler and Logan Nelson, and Violet and Niko Amos; one great-great-grandson, Leo Castillo; a sister-in-law, Lillian Tervonen, Houghton, Mich.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.      Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 111 So. Curry St., in Ironwood, with Pastor Peggy Rose officiating.      Committal will take place at the church, with a reception to follow at Tacconelli's in downtown Ironwood.      Spring burial will be in Sunset Acres Cemetery, Ironwood Township.      Pallbearers will be Brian Nelson, Herm Pernsteiner, Ken Talaska, Bob Tervonen, Ron Tervonen and Jason Travis.      In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Gogebic-Ontonagon Special Olympics, 1011 Peters St., Wakefield, Mich. 49968.      Gladys's obituary can be viewed online and condolences given to her family at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, Inc., Ironwood.
