Giles J. Wesley, 93, of 630 Smith St., Ironwood, died Monday, May 11, 2009, at his daughter's home in Cleveland, Ga. He was born April 27, 1916, in Stratford, Wis., son of the late John and Eleanor (Davis) Wesley. He attended St. John's Parochial School in Antigo, Wis. and graduated from Antigo High School in 1934. He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Antigo for one year. Giles was employed at McClellan Stores in Wisconsin for four years and at Kimberly-Clark Corp. in Duluth, Minn. While in Duluth, he attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth and received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration in 1956. He moved to Marquette and then to Norway with Kimberly-Clark Corp., then became Finance Administrator for the State of Michigan Department of Mental Health in Lansing in 1969, retiring in 1980 and moving to Ironwood. Giles was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, a past member and Exalted Ruler of the Iron Mountain Elks Lodge, and a past member of the Lansing Elks Lodge. He was also a member of the Aurora Athletic Club, the Ironwood Planning Commission, 55 Plus Club, AARP, the Association of Mental Health Administrators and the State Employees Retiree Association of the Upper Peninsula, and was a master craftsman in stained glass and wood carving. He enjoyed bowling and dancing in his younger years, and especially enjoyed traveling with his faithful companion, his little dog "Bebe." On Aug. 6, 1940, he was married to the former Lillian Matara at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late Rev. Haley. Lillian preceded Giles in death on Sept. 13, 1997. Surviving are two daughters, Lois Hill, Cleveland, Ga., and Phyllis Wesley; three grandchildren, Robert Vasher Wesley, Claremont, Fla., and Benjamin Wesley Hill and Andrew Wesley Hill, both of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Wesley, Evan, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Giles was preceded in death by two sons, Robert in 1997 and Richard in 2005; and four brothers, Frank, Roger, Lewis and Bert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, May 18, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl Pepin, celebrant. Rite of Committal will take place in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, with luncheon to follow in the parish hall. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday.
