Gertrude E. "Gertie" Hertel, 96, of Mercer, died peacefully Thursday morning, July 25, 2024, in her home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 9, 1928, in Medina, New York, the daughter of John W. and Mabel O. (Crean) Barber. She was united in marriage with Alvin C. "Al" Hertel on March 5, 1948, in Deerfield, together they moved to Mercer in 1979. She was known as the "sweet baker" at the Mercer BP gas station for many years. Gertie enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and baking, but most of all she loved taking care of her family.

Surviving is her son, Carl (Donna) Hertel of Mercer; five grandchildren, Kimberly (Greg) Bortz, Kevin (Alyssa) Hertel, Kelly (Hank) Joustra, Derek (Kristin) Hertel, and Nicole (Morgan) Hertel; 10 great-grandchildren, Taylar, Cassy, Grace, Hana, Ben, Jake, Cody, Levi, Saydee, Kyler and Wesley; and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Besides her parents, Gertie was preceded in death by her husband, Al in 2017; a son, Donald Hertel;

granddaughter, Cori Hertel, and her brother, John (Ivy) Barber.

No formal services are taking place. Burial will be held at Mercer Cemetery in Mercer, Wisconsin.
