George E. Vokolek, 55, of Pence,
died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at home. He was born Sept. 4, 1957, in Ironwood, Mich.,
son of William and the late Mary Jane (Bertagnoli) Vokolek, and attended St.
Mary's Grade School and J.E. Murphy High School in Hurley. He then entered the
U.S. Army on May 1, 1975, proudly serving his country stateside, and was
honorably discharged on June 14, 1976. George worked for Tri-State Homes, Dick
Dalpiaz Painting, and as a bartender in various local establishments. At the
time of his death, he was employed as a groundskeeper at Eagle Bluff Golf Club
in Hurley and bartended at the American Legion Lanes in Hurley and at Manny's in
Ironwood, Mich. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and fish. He especially
enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. George lived life to the
fullest and will be dearly missed by all. On Sept. 11, 1982, he was married to the
former Anna C. Ursini of Ironwood at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood by
the late Very Rev. Thomas Ruppe. Anna survives. Also surviving are two sons, George (Amanda),
Green Bay, and Brad, Galt, Calif.; two daughters, Eva Vokolek (Joe), Galt, and
Mary Jane (Dan) Wiseman, Ironwood; seven grandchildren; his father, William, Hurley;
two brothers, James (Carol), Montreal, and Roger (Karen), Hurley; three sisters,
Judy (Dave) Levra, Saxon, Grace (Randy) Fox, Burlington, Iowa, and Suzanne
(Gary) Nevala, Montreal; his mother-in-law, Eva Ursini, Ironwood;
brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Vince (Andrea) Ursini, Clinton Township, Mich.,
Nick (Colleen) Ursini, Ripon, Calif., Manny Ursini and John (Lisa) Ursini, all
of Ironwood, Sherry (Steve) Wernette, Rosevile, Mich., and Vicky (Jim)
Stachowski, Macomb, Mich.; and numerous nieces, nephews and
cousins. Besides his mother, George was preceded in
death by his father-in-law, James Ursini. In accordance with his wishes, cremation will
take place. Memorial services will be held Wednesday,
Sept. 19, at 11:30 a.m., preceded by visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the
McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev.
Michael Hayden officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the
combined Hurley American Legion Post 58 and Iron County Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 1580 Honor Guard. Condolences may be given to George's family
