Obituary

George P. Baker, 86 of Saxon, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 in Ashland. He was born in Ashland, Wisconsin on November 3, 1921 to the late Charles and Grace (Jacka) Baker. George married Margeret "Muggie" Paige on March 18, 1944 in Kirkland, Washington. She preceded him in death on September 26, 1995. He attended the Saxon schools, graduating in 1941. George then worked on the Great Lakes ore boats for 3 seasons. He served stateside in the U. S. Navy during WWII. Following his honorable discharge, he spent one more season on the Great Lakes. George worked at the Cary mine for 18 years and another 12 years at Hibbing Taconite, in Hibbing Mn., retiring in 1978. George was a member of the Mercier-Kero Saxon American Legion Post #371, the Aurora Athletic Club, St. Ann's Catholic Church and AARP. He enjoyed gardening and traveling. Survivors include a daughter Susan DaRonco, Saxon; 3 grandchildren; Cori (Mike) Reinhardt, Olympia, Wash., Paul DaRonco, Denver, Colo. and Candi (Dan) Rose, Kenosha, Wis.; 4 great-grandchildren; Nicki, Bryce and Casey Reinhardt, Olympia and Aaron DaRonco, Denver ; a sister Anna Mae (Derle) Olson, Corvallis, Oregon; a brother-in-law Roger (Patty) Paige, Hurley; and sister-in-laws Marion Baker, Independence, Oregon, Rosie Baker of Oregon and Arizona, Ona Halkowiez, Dallas, Tex. and Beverly Sullivan, Milwaukee, Wis. He is preceded in death by 2 brothers William and Robert and 2 sisters Mary Strick and Frances "Babe" Perrero and a brother-in-law Ray Strick. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, February 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Saxon, with the Rev Kevin Gordon officiating. Luncheon will follow at the Saxon Community Center. Spring burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Saxon. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service on Friday, February 8.
