Obituary

George E. Anderson, 79, of 937 N Hemlock St., Ironwood died Saturday July 19, 2008 in Ironwood. He was born October 23, 1928, son of the late George W. and Lina (Robinson) Anderson, raised in Ironwood and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1946. He served in the regular U.S. Army with "L" Company, 18th Infantry Regt., 1st Infantry Division in Germany and 8212 U.N.R.C. in the eighth Army in Korea. He was honorably discharged on May 26, 1952. George was married to Norma Rae Larson at the Bethany Covenant Church in Ironwood on July 15, 1950. She survives. He was employed with Armour and Company, Pickands Mather and Company and the City of Ironwood from 1967 thru 1992 as Finance Director, Treasurer, Assistant Manager and City Manager. George was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, past member of the Bethany Covenant Church, Honored Life member of Ironwood American Legion Post No. 5, served as Post Adjutant, Post Finance Officer and Post Commander; Life member of County Seat Post 3673, Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as Post Adjutant, Post Quartermaster and Post Commander and National Aide Decamp. ; Ironwood Industrial Development Corporation as the Treasurer, Santa's Helpers as Treasurer, Gogebic Community College Alumni Association having served as chairman, past chairman of the Gogebic-Iron Waste Water Board and Authority, City of Ironwood Police and Fireman's Pension and Retirement Board as Secretary-Treasurer, City of Ironwood General Retirement Board, Michigan Municipal League, International City Managers Association, Michigan City Managers Association, Municipal Finance Officers Association, Government Finance Officers Association, Michigan Treasurers Association, Michigan Notary Association, American Society of Public Administrators, Gogebic-Ontonagon Community Action Agency Board, Ironwood-Hurley Rotary, National Finnish-American Festival Inc. life member, Festival Ironwood, Joint Memorial Day Committee, Patriot's Day-A Day to Remember Committee. And he helped orphaned pets everywhere. Surviving are his wife, Norma; a daughter Paula Jo (Saeid) Roushani; a granddaughter Sarah Amanda Roushani, all of Cypress, Texas; a sister Patricia M. Hayes of Anchorage, Alaska; nieces Debra Grabo of Anchorage, Karin Purcell of Los Angeles, Cali. ; Laura Kolbeck of Palmer, Alaska; Katie Serrahn of Green Bay, Wis.; Jane Aicher of Pleasant Hill, Cali., Andrea Serrahn of Oakland, Cali., Janice Martin of Jacksonville, Florida, a nephew Dr. Robin Serrahn of San Francisco, Cali., sister-in-laws Gloria Vesper of Burnett, Tex., and Geri Kennedy of Green Bay. George is preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service for George will be Tuesday, July 22, at 11:00 AM, at Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood with Pastor Francis Strong officiating. Committal services and inurnment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, where full military rites will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 and the Bessemer VFW Post 3673 Honor Guards. Luncheon will be served in the church fellowship immediately upon return from the cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the church on Tuesday.
