Genevieve M. "Gen" Michela, 87, of Duluth , Minn. and a former longtime Ironwood,
Mich.
resident, died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at the Franciscan Health Center in Duluth .
The former Genevieve Shea was born Oct. 27, 1922 , in Ironwood, daughter of the late Patrick
and Agnes (Ericson) Shea, attended St. Ambrose
Grade School , and graduated from
St. Ambrose High
School in 1940. After graduation she worked at the Ironwood
Daily Globe and in Washington , D.C. for a short time during World War
II.
She was married to Domenic A. Michela on Aug. 23, 1947 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in
Ironwood by the late Msgr. J.B. Moriarity. Gen and Dom then raised their family
in Ironwood, moving to Duluth in Sept. 2006.
Gen was a current member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood and a
former member of St. Ambrose and Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she sang in
choirs in all three churches and served as a religious education instructor at
Holy Trinity. She was also a member of the Gogebic Range Chorus and Ironwood
Women's Club, the St. Ambrose-Ironwood Catholic Alumni and Friends Association,
where she served as past mailing secretary, and a lifelong member of the
Auxiliary to Ironwood American Legion Post 5 for 55 continuous years. She
volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, and enjoyed coffee klatching and cooking and
baking for family and friends. She especially enjoyed spending time at their
summer home on Lake Gogebic .
Surviving are her three children, Margaret (Martin) Celeski, Ironwood, and
Joseph (Vicky) Michela
and Paula (James) Fredrickson, both of Duluth; grandchildren, Laurie Celeski,
Ironwood, Kristina (Brian) Kershaw, Ryan Michela (Katie Petit), Kyle and Scott
Michela, all of Duluth, Carla (John) Fesnick, Eden Prairie, Minn., and Erica
(Andrew) Williams, Duluth; great-grandchildren, Nicole and Dylan Taivalmaa,
Andrew Celeski, Caitlyn Fesnick, Evan Williams and Wyatt Petit; a brother, John
Daniel Shea, Des Plaines, Ill.; a sister, Marilyn Bollinger, Norridge, Ill.;
sister-in-law, Jean (Ted) Lepore, Hurley, Wis.; brother-in-law, Lawrence
(Lorraine) Michela, Tomah, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Gen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62
years, Domenic, exactly eight months earlier, on Dec. 29, 2009; a son, Charles
L. Michela, on Aug. 13,
1972 ; a brother, Francis Shea; and two sisters, Bernadine Ann
Peterson and Patricia Amundson.
A
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m., at
Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin,
celebrant.
Rite of Committal will take place in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church,
with luncheon to follow in the parish hall.
Burial
will be in Riverside Cemetery , Ironwood.
Relatives and friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church from
10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, where members of Pere
Menard Assembly 471, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, will serve as honor
guard.
Pallbearers will be Ryan, Kyle and Scott Michela, Andrew Celeski, Dylan
Taivalmaa, Brian Kershaw, Andrew Williams and William Kerwith.
Memorials are preferred to the Our Lady of Peace Adopt-A-Student Program,
