Obituary

Gayl P. Mattson, 73, of Ironwood, died peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, in her home, with her loving family by her side.      The former Gayl Waterman was born Oct. 4, 1940, in Wakefield Township, daughter of the late Clement and Ida (Taube) Waterman, and attended Wakefield schools. She worked in various retail stores in the area for many years, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood.      Gayl loved crocheting and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was very fun loving and always enjoyed a good game of cards. She also was a foster parent to many children over the years.      She was married to her husband, Eldon K. Mattson, for 33 years. He survives.      Also surviving are three children, Jody Krone, Ironwood, Diane Jensen, Clarksville, Tenn., and Zachary Mattson, Kingsford; five stepchildren, Richard Mattson, Ironwood, Randall Mattson, Republic, Russell Mattson, Ironwood, and Debbie and Tina, both of Milwaukee; eight grandchildren; numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph (Gerry) Waterman, Appleton, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Douglas Mattson,  and sister-in-law, Delores Raisanen, both of Ironwood Township.      Besides her parents, Gayl was preceded in death by a son, John Krone, on May 18, 2008; a brother, Clayton "Bucky" Waterman; and sisters, Sharon Sobolewski, Yvonne Thiede, Annice LaVigne, Elaine Shauger and Aileen "Sandy" Kennedy.      Cremation has taken place.      A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Kurt Brandon, pastor, officiating.      Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.      Private committal and interment will be in Sunset Acres Cemetery, Ironwood Township.      In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church, 5104 E. Margaret St., Ironwood, MI 49938.      Arrangements have been entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood, where condolences may be expressed online at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.
