Garfield Rae "Duke" Drake, 89, of Ironwood, died Sunday, March 25, 2012, in Hurley. He was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Stambaugh, Mich., son of the late Garfield and Pearl (Rae) Drake, and graduated from Stambaugh High School in 1940. He entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 18, 1942 and served in New Guinea, Luzon and the Philippines during World War II, receiving the Philippine Liberation Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the American Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on Jan. 13,1946. Prior to his deployment overseas, Duke married the love of his life, Cleo Mary Stilwill, on Jan. 20, 1944, at the First Methodist Church in Santa Barbara, Calif. They recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Cleo Mary preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 2012. Following his discharge from the Army, Duke returned to Ironwood where he worked for his father-in-law, Russell E. Stilwill, at Stilwill Heating and Ventilation for many years, later becoming owner. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, Ironwood American Legion Post 5, and enjoyed boating and fishing. Together with Cleo Mary, they leased a campground in Lac du Flambeau, Wis. for many years and loved to travel extensively. Surviving are a brother, Ray (Carol), Stambaugh; sister-in-law, Opal "Jackie" Shouldice, Ironwood; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Garfield Rae "Skip" Drake III, on July 10, 2010; and a brother, Merlin. Out of respect for Duke's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held Friday, March 30, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with Pastor Peggy Rose officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow at Tacconelli's in downtown Ironwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Salem Lutheran Church or to the Garfield "Skip" Drake Scholarship Fund, in care of Gogebic Community College, E4946 Jackson Road, Ironwood, MI 49938.
