Frances M. Guenther, 95, of
Hurley, Wis., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation
and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood. The former Frances Rosi was born Feb. 6, 1917,
in Hurley, daughter of the late Hannibal and Maria (Fossatti) Rosi, attended St.
Mary's Grade School, and graduated from Hurley High School in 1935. She attended
nursing school in Colorado, becoming a registered nurse, then entered the U.S.
Army Nursing Corps on Sept. 17, 1942, serving in England and France during World
War II, and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant on Feb. 3,
1946. Following her discharge, Frances worked as an
RN at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and resided there for many years.
Returning to Hurley in 1971, she was employed as Iron County Public Health nurse
for ten years, retiring in 1981. Frances was a member of St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Hurley, Iron County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1580, and the Hurley
Lionettes. During her employ as Iron County nurse, she served on various
committees on the county level. She enjoyed playing bridge. She married Robert E. Guenther in 1950. He
preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 2003. Surviving are a son, Robert L. (Nancy), and
three grandchildren, Rachel, Elizabeth and David, all of Evanston, Ill.; two
sisters, Florence Anonich, Mercer, Wis., and Esther Jeglum, San Ramon, Calif.;
and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Frances was
predeceased by a daughter, Susan Guenther, in 1979. Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has
taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Saturday, March 16, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's
Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM, celebrant. A flag presentation ceremony will follow,
accorded by representatives of the combined Hurley American Legion Post 58 and
Iron Co. VFW Post 1580 Honor Guard. Rite of Committal and interment will be in
Hillside Cemetery, Iron Belt, in the spring. Luncheon will be served at the Liberty Bell
Chalet following services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are
preferred. Arrangements have been entrusted to
