Evelyn M.
Hovey, 88, of Ironwood, died Friday, May 24, 2013, at Westgate Nursing,
Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood. The former Evelyn Holst
was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Oscar and Ida (Berg)
Holst, attended A.L. Norrie Grade School, and graduated from Luther L. Wright
High School in 1942. She was employed as a
dispatcher/clerk for the Alaska Steamship Co. in Seward, Alaska in the
early 1950s, then returned to Ironwood, where she worked as a telephone
operator for Michigan Bell Telephone Co. for several years. She retired as
assistant store manager at Sears-Roebuck & Co. in downtown Ironwood
after 25 years of service in 1983. Evelyn was a member of
Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood and a former member of Aurora Chapter, Order
of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening and the
outdoors. On Dec. 24, 1949, she was
married to Sid Hovey in Bessemer. He preceded her in death on April 30,
2010. Surviving are two sons,
Kurt, Bergland, and Randy (Kerri), Wakefield; a grandson, Ryan (Jennifer),
Sherman Oaks, Calif.; three great-grandsons, Andrew, Ethan and Blake; a brother,
Bill (Jean) Holst, Ironwood Township; four sisters, Doris Hild, Enumclaw, Wash.,
and Shirley Martini, Marilyn (Florian) Partyka, and Nancy (Bob) Sertic, all of
Ironwood Township; a sister-in-law, Corrine Holst, Ironwood; and numerous nieces
and nephews. Besides her parents and
husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Deane Holst; and sister,
Eileen Sanders. Per Evelyn's wishes,
cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Arrangements are entrusted
