Esther M. Baker, 93, of Pence,
Wis., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at Essentia Health-St. Mary's
Medical Center in Duluth. The former Esther Swetkovich was born Feb. 18,
1918, in Pence, daughter of the late Peter and Pauline (Reinerio) Swetkovich,
attended Pence School, and graduated from Hurley High School in
1936. She married Albert Baker on April 11, 1939, in
Vinton, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 1988. Esther was a member of St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Hurley and the former Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Pence and its
Women's Council. An avid bowler, she bowled in leagues at the American Legion
Lanes in Hurley, Wis. for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, baking,
flower gardening and card club at the Iron County Senior Center in
Hurley. Surviving are a son, Dale (Nina), Hanover,
Penn., and daughter, Gale (Michael) Boggio, Laurium, Mich.; four grandchildren,
Brent, Brian and Dale Baker, and Craig (Karen) Boggio; four great-grandchildren,
David Boggio, and Bradley, Chase and Brent Baker; a brother, Earl (Verona)
Swetkovich, Pence; sister, Lillian Perich, Milwaukee; sister-in-law, Sandra
Drake, Delmar, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special
friends. Besides her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by brothers, John and Gerald Swetkovich, and Gerald Drake; and
a sister, Madeline "Madge" Rowe. Out of respect for Esther's wishes, cremation
has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Saturday, May 12, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM,
celebrant. Private interment will be in St. Mary's
Cemetery, Hurley. Esther's obituary can be viewed online and
