Elmi A. Jolgren, 89, of Ironwood Township, died Monday evening , March 2, 2009, in Ironwood. The former Elmi Vuorenmaa was born Aug. 28, 1919, in Forest Lake, Mich., the daughter of the late Erick and Liisa Selina (Kitula) Vuorenmaa, and attended school in Ironwood Township. She was employed at the Oscar Mayer Co. in Chicago for 20 plus years, retiring in 1979 and returning to Ironwood Township. Elmi was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ironwood. She loved to cook and bake, especially biscuits and pasties, and especially enjoyed going to the casino. A fun loving person that enjoyed life to the fullest, she will be deeply missed. She was married to Alvin E. Jolgren on Aug. 30, 1941, on the family farm in Ironwood Township. He preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1979. Surviving are a son, Keith, Bartlett, Ill.; two daughters, Sandra (Dan) Roberts, Bartlett, and Kathy (Jamie) Dufexes, Algonquin, Ill.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; six brothers, Arvo Vuorenmaa and Harold (Irene) Vuorenmaa, both of Ironwood Township; William (Shirley) Vuorenmaa, Franklin Park, Ill., Niilo Vuorenmaa (Sonja Luoma), Saxon, Wis., and Lauri (Darlene) Vuorenmaa and Kenneth (Marlene) Vuorenmaa, both of Ironwood; a sister, Lillian Cornwall, Chicago; her companion, Arnold Haanpaa, Ironwood Township; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Vuorenmaa, Ironwood Township; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Elmi was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Holmes; a grandson, Richard Roberts; and six brothers, Eino, John, Oiva, Elmer, Sulo and Toivo Vuorenmaa. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 7, at noon, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 111 S. Curry St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Francis Strong officiating. Committal will take place at the church, with luncheon to follow at Brewster's Northwoods Bar in downtown Ironwood. Spring burial will be in Sunset Acres Cemetery, Ironwood Township. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Arvo, William, Harold, Niilo and Kenneth Vuorenmaa, and Arnold Haanpaa.
