Obituary

Elma E. Koivisto, 92, a former longtime Ironwood, MI, Erwin Township resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at Wyndemere Estates in Green Bay, Wis., following a lengthy illness. The former Elma Pelto was born June 27, 1915, in Erwin Township, daughter of the late John and Elina (Maki) Pelto. She was married to Jacob E. Koivisto on Dec 31, 1935 and lived most of her life in Erwin Township where they raised three sons. For the past eight years she had resided in Green Bay and was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Elma enjoyed reading and writing long letters, (she saved all the cards and letters she received going back to the forties, thus giving her family members special memories to cherish). She loved her animals and always had funny stories to tell about them. Her enjoyment of the outdoors was seen in her photography and art. Her special thumb print cookies, muffins and Finnish breads were made often to share with family and friends. Elma was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood and spent hours sanding and filling holes when it was built in 1954. She served on the Altar Guild and had many enjoyable days with the Dorcas and Friendship Guild members making quilts and visiting. She was also a member of the Community Club in Erwin Township and served on several committees. Surviving are three sons, Jacob Dean (Arlene), Green Bay, William Dale (Pam), Duluth, MN, and John David (Joyce), West Allis, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Alan (Lynn) Koivisto, Kim (Jim) Vanden Branden, Jill (Mike) Krcma, Crystal (Ken) Gehl, Keith (Tracy) Koivisto, Jim and Ben Brose, and Sue (Dave) Chapman; six great-grandchildren, Amber and Dillon Vanden Branden, Alex and Olivia Koivisto, and Mitchell and Lauren Krcma; great-great-granddaughters, Maya and Ila, great-great-grandsons, Jayden and Mason; and nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. Besides her parents, Elma was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob, on April 14, 1978, and brother, William Pelto. The Koivisto family extends their gratitude to the staff of Wyndemere, Green Bay, for their special care. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 12, at 12:30 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Lutheran Church, corner of Margaret and Lake St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Larry Steckling, vacancy pastor, officiating. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service on Sunday.
