Obituary

Elizabeth L. "Liza" Smith, 94, a former long-time Gile resident, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, in Hurley.      The former Elizabeth Giacomino was born July 1, 1917, in Gile, daughter of the late John and Caroline (Matte) Giacomino, attended Roosevelt School in Montreal, and graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley in 1936.      She was married to Harry Smith on June 30, 1938, at the St. Mary's rectory in Hurley by the late Rev. Peter F. Meyer. Harry preceded her in death on June 15, 1998.      Elizabeth worked at Calvi's Store in Gile for several years. She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, bingo and playing cards, and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley.      Surviving are two daughters, Marlene Baron (Dave Wittig), Green Bay, and Jeanne (Tony) Gulan, Shell Lake; five grandchildren, Nathan Baron, Wisconsin Dells, Brenda Eder, Ashland, Glenn Baron, Hudson, Toni Leigh Gulan, Coon Rapids, Minn., and Robert (Jill) Gulan, Union Grove; six great-grandchildren, Erica (Matthew) Lehto, Stephen and Kevin Eder; and Adam, Ryan and Benjamin Gulan; five great-great-grandchildren, Tyler, Maryn, Aubrey, Derrick and Allie Lehto; a sister, Ann Tiziani, Ironwood; brother-and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Marjorie Smith, Ramsay, Mich., Lorraine Smith, Bakersfield, Calif., and Virginia Giacomino, Pence; and numerous nieces and nephews.      Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dominic, in infancy, and Dominic "Jocko" Giacomino; and a sister, Mary Zanella.      In accordance with Elizabeth's wishes , cremation has taken place.      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev.
