Obituary

Elizabeth Lynn "Betty" Johnson (née Schiavetti), a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, at the age of 78. Betty was known for her unwavering faith, her enduring spirit, her creative hobbies, and her knack for finding the very best deals.

Born on September 16, 1947, Betty was a lifelong resident of the Upper Peninsula, attending and graduating from St. Ambrose Catholic School. She furthered her education at Gogebic Community College. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Arthur Johnson. They were married and established their home in Ironwood, MI, where they lovingly raised their three children: Gerald, Thomas, and Beth Ann.

Betty dedicated many years of her professional life to retail, starting at J.C. Penney's in Ironwood, MI. When the local store closed, she bravely relocated to Merrill, WI, to be near her daughter, finishing her career with J.C. Penney's in Wausau, WI. Betty's time in retail provided her with an expert eye for value, ensuring she always had a good deal to share and that her children were always well-clothed for the school year. Her unwavering faith was paramount; she rarely missed a Sunday service, regardless of what town she was in.

Upon retirement, Betty and Art became "Snowbirds," finding their second beloved home in Pinellas Park, FL, where they made many new friends and enjoyed countless sunny days together.

Betty was a woman who was never without a hobby. Whether she was out in nature picking wild raspberries or mushrooms, creating detailed art through wood-burning, or painting, her hands were always busy. She truly cherished spending time with her family and friends, and she and Art shared many happy memories traveling and enjoyed going on cruises.

Betty's spirit and love will forever be carried on by her loving children: Gerald (Jerry) Johnson and his wife, Cyndi; Thomas Johnson and his wife, Jill; and Beth Ann Grefe and her husband, Matt. She is further survived by her cherished grandchildren: Cassie Weber, Evan Erspamer, Jerzy Johnson, Reid Supercynski-Johnson, Nate (fiancée Allie Becker), Henry Grefe, and Lily Grefe.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Art Johnson; her parents, Benjamin and Harriet Schiavetti; her brother, Lil Benny; her in-laws, Eanar and Melissa Johnson; and her brother-in-law, Dennis Johnson.

A Celebration of Betty's Life will be held on Friday, May 29th, with visitation from 10 a.m. to the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Fr. Brian Gerber officiating at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery.
